I am on a health kick and thanks to my new Ninja blender.... a smoothie kick too!!! I got brave and wanted to see what these green smoothies are all about. Don't be scared.... they are good!!!! I would suggest starting out small. Add a small handful of spinach only...and/or put the smoothie in a closed dark cup so you can't "see the green" until you get used to it. I've recently doubled my green intake and still love it!!! Here is my original recipe. Your bladder will thank you for all the nutrients you are giving it!!! Oh... and I added up all the calories... only 163!!!!
Ingredients:
1 1/2 Cups Unsweetened Almond Milk
1/2 frozen banana (leave out if banana's bother you)
7 frozen blueberries
1/8 Cup Quick Oats (Add more for hungrier appetites!!)
3 slices of pears (I used Del Monte Lite Canned Pears... a can lasts me about a week)
1/2 Cup packed Spinach
1/4 Cup Kale or Collard Greens
1 Small (about 4-5 inches) celery stick (I freeze mine)
Directions:
Add all ingredients in blender and blend. Be sure to blend for a long time (about 3 minutes) to make sure all greens are liquified. I don't like to chew my smoothies!! ;)
Yields about 20 ounces
I'm counting calories and learning to cook all over again. I can't see me sticking to a new eating plan if I just trudge through, so I've picked up some really yummy recipes and combos that don't make me feel like I'm on a diet. This smoothie sounds healthy and satisfying. I've only discovered almond milk in the last few weeks, and I really like it!

Hi Nicki, I love your blog. Thank you so much for all the recipes, they're so helpful. I have a hot beverage recipe you might like. I make vanilla steamers all the time, and they taste just like Starbucks. I heat 1 cup of milk on the stove, add 1 1/4 Tablespoons of French Vanilla Syrup (I order it from the INC shop online), and about 1/2 tsp of honey. I then insert s wisk into my hand mixer, and beat it until frothy. I let it get very hot but not to the boiling point. It's tastes so delicious.

ReplyDeleteI just went through your whole blog and it's amazing. Just been diagnosed with IC, although mild, it's been chronic, and worsening. I am a health nut and couldn't understand why my completely clean, mostly raw, vegan diet wasn't making me feel perfect... now I know why. Putting a name to my symptoms is a relief, although daunting. I'm starting the elimination diet today and already found that raw snap peas are no bueno... anyway, thank you so much for sharing your story and your recipes. Another recipe to add to your "health kick"... try almond milk from scratch... 2 tbs almond butter, 1-2 dates, pinch of cinnamon, pinch of sea salt and 2 cups water. Blend for a minute, strain out pulp and enjoy!

ReplyDeleteHi everyone!!!! Thank you so much for all the comments. Sorry I haven't responded... i'm 33 weeks pregnant with a very complicated pregnancy (non IC related) and things have been crazy. I'm so glad everyone is enjoying the blog! If it helps just one person I feel it's been totally worth it! My IC has been doing great, but then again I'm pregnant and I always go into remission while pregnant (been enjoying spicy mustard, ect.) However, before getting pregnant I was doing much better as well. Only had one flare in the last year (a rather long, 2 month flare...boo). I attribute my success to Elmiron, drinking only Evian, and these recipes!!! If I cheat (when I'm not flaring) It's always at restaurants. My home is always 100% IC friendly.

ReplyDeleteI can only speak for myself but pears do not bother most icers. It's one of the few safe fruits along with blueberries. I would stay away from canned pears and go with fresh as the canned pears could have preservatives that could set you off.
DeleteAll smoothies are good for you because they contains fruit but it's much better if you have the time to make your own using fresh or frozen fruit. That way you know exactly what when into it.Blendtec

ReplyDeleteThanks. I need to learn to eat better for US problem (have suffered horrifically with for many years). I noticed All the grated parmesan cheese in store has citric acid in it. Many people with US cannot have.
